Art Video Game Reflection

Trisha Voisin
Memory Art Game about Discrimination Against Woman

TECHNICAL
When I was working on this assignment, I leaned a few new techniques when using the program 'Adobe Flash Professional CC 2014'. These techniques are: Inserting key frames, importing photos to the program, and changing text colour, font, size and the background.
IDEA OR CONCEPT
At the beginning of the Art Video Game my plans were:
An object that could represent 'Discrimination Against Girls' is pots and pans. This affects are world in many ways. Three ways that this could affect this world is by: 1) Girls mainly in Afghanistan do not
learn about how to read, write, or anything else that happens during school. 2) Sexist Men still think that there wife should stay at home and do the cooking, cleaning, take care of children, and shopping. 3) Sexist Men believe that woman should not be doing a mans job: such as plumbing, carpenter, and farmer.
This affects the world because those woman will never now what it is like to earn money herself for her family/ never be able to do what see loves most.
What I can use for each section are,
1.The instruction Screen Background-bunch of different photos of girls doing guy jobs
2.The Game Background-girl being confused in a kitchen
3.The question Side Of The Cards-girly pattern
4.The Picture Side Of The Cards
-girls holding books in a hall
-woman cooking
-woman cleaning
-woman taking care of kids
-woman going crazy taking care of kids
-woman being forced to stay at home
-woman shopping for food
5.Fonts/Game Description/Messages-big and colorful fonts
6.The Lose Screen, Messages-girl pouting/crying

In the end some of my ideas changed. Some examples of this are: 1)For the instruction page i put a girl looking at her computers while talking on the phone. Instead of a bunch of different photos of girls doing guys jobs. 2)For the cards I use a girl walking away from school, a woman standing waiting for her husband to eat, a woman shopping with her child, a woman going crazy with her kids playing, a woman cleaning while her husband just sits watching television, a woman bring food for her husbands and his friends, and lastly a woman putting away her child's toys. Instead of girls holding books in a hallway, woman cooking, woman cleaning, woman going crazy taking care of her kids, woman being forced to stay at home, and woman shopping for food. 3)For the background I have a star background with hand holding the earth. Instead of a girl being confused in the kitchen.

INFLUENCES
There were no artists or anyone that has influenced my work in anyway.

COMPOSITION
I emphasized the losing page by picking a picture that is in black and white picture of a pouting little girl.
I emphasized the winning page by putting a girl that is so happy that she is on her knees crying.
I emphasized the home page by putting the world in outer space. Also, I putting the symbol for males and females to say that this problem is not just in one country it is everywhere.

MOTIVATION
My personal motivation beyond the requirements of this assignment is that I know so many people that are friends of my family that are females who have sexist husbands. They are hardly ever aloud to leave the house, they are supposed to stay home and do all the house work, i.e. cooking and cleaning, etc. So my motivation stemmed from my need to make their husbands (and husbands/men like them) see that the way they treat women is wrong and extremely out-dated; they need to get the hint that it's the twenty first century.

CRITICAL ASSESSMENT
I think that the most interesting and successful elements of the game is the backgrounds on the home page, winning page and the losing page.
The thing that surprised me the most are how well the combination of the pictures for the home page combined together. Also, throughout the process I had no idea what to do for the cards.
With additional time I think that I would change most of the pictures for the cards and the how to play page background.

Art Video Game Brainstorming

a)Possible Themes
  • Endangered Africa Animals (people killing the animals for there skin, tusks, teeth, and so on)
  • Discrimination Against Girls (girls cant: go to school in some countries, certain jobs like pluming, electrician, carpenter. They should stay in the house and not get a job.)
  • Discrimination Against Homeless/ people that need food banks

b) Discrimination Against Girls
An object that could represent 'Discrimination Against Girls' is pots and pans. This affects are world in many ways. Three ways that this could affect this world is by: 1) Girls mainly in Afghanistan do not
learn about how to read, write, or anything else that happens during school. 2) Sexist Men still think that there wife should stay at home and do the cooking, cleaning, take care of children, and shopping. 3) Sexist Men believe that woman should not be doing a mans job: such as plumbing, carpenter, and farmer.
This affects the world because those woman will never now what it is like to earn money herself for her family/ never be able to do what see loves most.

c) I am most interesting in turning this into an art video game because i wish to make everyone aware that sexism and discrimination is still an ongoing occurrence, thereby making it still a problem today.

d) Memory Game
1.The instruction Screen Background-bunch of different photos of girls doing guy jobs
2.The Game Background-girl being confused in a kitchen

Toy Hack Question

1) If you were to box and sell this what would you market is as (what is the purpose)?
If I were to box and sell my toy I would call I the new and improved Vixen from Santa's Reindeer.
There are two purposes to this toy, there is a personal on and a environment purpose.
The personal purposed is when i was little i thought that Santa's reindeer had wings on there backs like birds. Also, ears like bats so they could use echo location to find there way thought snowstorms.
The environment purpose is to save the Arctic. So, all the animals (such as the polar bears, reindeer, penguins, arctic wolf, and so on) can live with out being in danger of going extincted.

2) What do you like most (3). Least (3). what would you do if you could re-do it (3).
What I like the most is: How the bag looks like it is stuffed with toys and how it sits on the reindeer's back. I also like the bow in front of the one antler. The last thing that i like is how well the wings look like they were always on the reindeer.
What I don't like is: the beads that are supposed to look like snowflakes. Also, how it is supposed to look like the deer is holding the toy instead of it just being attach to it's leg. The last thing that i don't like is how poorly the one ear was sawed on.
If I could redo my toy i would change a few thing. The first thing would would be taking off the beads. The second thing is putting bells on the ribbon that is tied around the reindeer's neck. The third thing is I would resaw the right ear so it would look like the left one.

Create Your Own Art Movie

Trisha Voisin
What Happens Next: Art Movie
The Video's That I Used Are: Metropolis, Deadmen Don't Wear Plaid, Black Beauty, Flame, and Television Static.
The Music/Sounds That I Used Are: X Ray Dog (Dethroned), and Television Static.
Tuesday April 7, 2015

TECHNICAL
New technical steps and developments that I used in my work on the art movie are:
1) I muted the sound for the flame, horse, and for the Deadmen Don't Wear Plaid video's that I used and add a song and television static instead.
2) I added a flame video to the videos as an overlay so give the videos a new look and a suspense feeling.

IDEA OR CONCEPT
At the beginning my plans for my movie were: The thermometer starting to go up (from, Metropolis), the detective going walking into the station (from, Deadmen Don't wear Plaid), the thermometer going up still (from, Metropolis), the guy looking at the detective over his newspaper (from, Deadmen Don't wear Plaid), horse rearing, detective looking behind him to look at the guy looking at him as the he looks back at the newspaper (from, Deadmen Don't wear Plaid), horse running off into the distance (maybe in the dessert if possible), the detective looking out the train window (from, Deadmen Don't wear Plaid), and the thermometer goes up fully (from, Metropolis).

In the end many of my ideas had changed. Four examples of how my ideas ended up changing in the end are: 1) I ended up putting the two video's of the guy looking at the detective over his newspaper (from, Deadmen Don't wear Plaid), and detective looking behind him to look at the guy looking at him as the he looks back at the newspaper (from, Deadmen Don't wear Plaid) together.
2) I ended up adding a flame video to all of my video to give it more suspense.
3) I ended up adding 3 video's from the movie 'Black Beauty' of Ginger and Beauty running off onto the distance (the first of Beauty, then Ginger, and then of the both of them). Also, i ended up 2 video's from the movie 'Black Beauty' of a horse rearing up (the first of Beauty and then Ginger).
4)  Instead of having the thermometer appearing only 3 times i had it appear 4 times.

INFLUENCES
No, there was no artist that influenced my project, when I was working on it.

COMPOSITION
When the flames move around the video your eyes follow it, causing your eyes to move around to see the rest of the video.

MOTIVATION
Beyond fulfilling the requirements for this assignment, my personal motivation for this work was that i have always wanted to learn how to make video's when using clips from other peoples movies. Also, when i was working on this assignment i was able to get my creative mind that made me want to work on art related things at home and at school (all the time).

CRITICAL ASSESSMENT
The element that I find that are the most interesting and successful is the way that the flames changed the coloring and in general look of each movie clip.
What I found that surprised me the most was how well the horses were able to blend in with the rest of the clips. Also, I was really surprised how well the music makes your adrenaline pump and makes your mind wonder what is going to happen.
With additional time I don't think I would really change anything.

How is Hero an Art Movie? Questions.

1) By looking at the explanation of an art movie above, please describe at least three ways (three sentences) that you think Hero could be considered, at least in part, an art movie?

By looking at the explanation from above about what makes an art movie, I have come up with three ways for how I think that the movie 'Hero' is considered and art movie. These three ways are:
a) The middle of the story starts the movie off and the beginning starts in the middle of the movie (the beginning of the story turns into a flashback, so, then it the beginning and the middle of the story could switch spots in the movie).
b) The directer focuses on the emotions of the actors and the art of the story (colours, martial art, and so on), instead of focusing on the story line.
c)The movie in general was extremely confusing. (Most art movie are confusing.)

2)How does the director also make this movie for everyone, so that it's not too artistic or alienating for the average viewer? Please explain in at least three sentences.

The director makes this movie less artistic or alienating for the average viewer, so everyone could somewhat enjoy it. He did this by:
a) Having the average love triangle that almost everyone loves to see in movies. Which makes it somewhat of a romance movie.
b) Having a lot of fighting (martial arts, and having swords). Which made it somewhat action/thriller movie.
c) He put this moving into a foreign language, with most people enjoy while others don't.

3)Did you like this movie? Why or why not? Please explain in at least four sentences.

No, I did not really like this moving. The reason for this, is because I was unable to understand what was happening in it. For example, I was unable to keep up with all the subtitles so, I don't now what they said most of the time. Another example is, I found it really weird how the director made the actors fly through the air with they were fighting. In conclusion, I did not enjoy this move as much as others did.

4)Sequences in the film are 'colour coded', enabling Zhang Yimou to offer his audience ravishing and memorable images which enhance his action sequences. Write three sentences about how Zhang Yimou has used colour to emphasize or enhance aspects of the narrative.
Select one of these sequences.

  • the fight in the rain
  • the golden forest
  • the attack on the calligraphy school at Zhao
  • the library
  • the combat at the lake
  • Broken Sword and Flying Snow's attack on the King
I pick the Golden Forest.
In the scene of the golden forest the director Zhang Yimou uses very clever colour techniques to emphasize and enhance aspects of the narrative. An example of him being very clever while using colours is when he used a pale-ish yellow to enhance the red clothing that Flying Snow and Broken Sword's assistant Moon wore during their battle. The pale yellow colour that Zhang Yimou uses makes the red colour pop out. Also, when he changes the colour of the trees from a pale yellow puts suspense into the scene making you wonder what is going to happen: Is Moon going to die right there or is she going to attack Flying Snow again and kill her to avenge her Master Broken Sword? In conclusion, in the scene of the golden forest the director Zhang Yimou uses clever colour techniques to emphasize and enhance aspects of the narrative.
